Summary
I, like many people, am attempting to migrate away from services run by billionaire tech oligarchs. Part of that was my move to Mastodon (I still have a vestigial presence on Facebook and Instagram, only to be able to administer the Kampilan Eskrima pages there; I nuked my Twitter/X/NaziBar account long, long ago). The other part is towards self-hosting, such as this site.
When I say “self-hosting”, I don’t mean I have a server room in my basement - that’s a time and expense I really don’t want to deal with. Instead, I use hosting services, preferably not in the US and not owned by someone whose business interests “trump” everyone else’s rights.
The company I settled on was Hetzner, headquartered in Germany, but having servers all over. Their dashboard is really easy to understand, and their prices are pretty good.
Current Status
In addition to this website, I’m hosting Immich to replace Apple iCloud, funkwhale for music, and peertube for videos. They’re all easy to set up through docker compose, and I run them all on one server. Easy-peezy.
